How to stop your dog from constantly barking. Are dog barking collars the answer?

There is nothing worse than a dog that barks constantly. Believe me, I have one of those. I have tried several different methods to stop the madness and will share with you my findings.

Why dogs bark

Dogs bark for a variety of reasons: some of this behavior is out of frustration, some out of loneliness, and some perhaps to alert Fluffy down the avenue about squirrels. Yelling at them isn t going to stop them. The only thing you managed to do is anger the dog causing it to bark more. Training an older dog not to bark can be more difficult, since older dogs tend to be more set in their ways.

Are dog barking collars the answer

Dog barking collars shouldn't be used until the dog is somewhat comfortable being alone; otherwise, the correction is more likely to increase his fear than be associated negatively with his barking. There are several different types of these dog barking collars

Ultrasonic sound dog barking collars

Ultrasonic sound dog barking collars are worn around the neck of the dog and emits a high pitch sound when the dog barks. These dog barking collars are based on the idea of using a loud noise to startle a dog into not barking. This sound is similar to a dog whistle and works as a distraction to stop the dog. This worked great on my puppy, but not on a friends older dog. If your dog gets it and is able to associate barking with a terrible noise, then the barking may stop in a few days (but it may resume once the collar is off). If your dog doesn t figure out that the loud noise comes whenever he barks, you ll have barking dog and a noisy collar both to contend with.

Citrus Spray dog barking collars

Another way to stop a barking dog is called Citrus Spray, Every time the dog barks the dog collar sprays the dog in the face. It is a fact that dogs hate citrus, so they will learn not to bark. This did work, however, the spray on the dog barking collar sometimes pointed in the wrong direction and didn t hit the dog's face. Soon the dog would bark and face the other way.

Shock dog barking collars

Shock dog barking collars are the most effective type of deterrent, but to me was the hardest to implement. I was very nervous about shocking my dog. My husband even tried the dog barking collars on to see how intense the shock was. Well, I ll tell you. That collar went back before it even reached my dogs neck. I just couldn t do it. I do have friends that have used it and now their dog doesn t make a peep.

In conclusion

I have found that dog barking collars do little to stop constant barking. They may help minimize the problem, but nothing I have tried has stopped it.
