Should You Get an Electric Pet Door?

Electric pet door is a pet door that you install in a door in your house that opens when your pet approaches in by detecting it with a sensor on the door. They are generally more expensive than regular pet doors. Is an electric pet door right for you?

Yes? Having an electric pet door can be convenient. If you don't have a pet door, electric or otherwise, then you have to keep letting your dog or cat out yourself. This can get to be a real problem especially if you either have a busy lifestyle or have difficulty walking. If you were to install an electric pet door you would never have to let your pet out again.

Having an electric pet door is also cleaner. I have a pet door that only opens by my dog pushing against it with her nose. That door is smeared by her little doggie nose. My cat uses it too and the cat hair from him sticks to the surface as well. In short: it would be very dirty if I don't clean it regularly. An electric pet door would open when your pet approaches it so it wouldn't get wet or have hair stick to it. It would be much cleaner.

No? Some people would be put off by the expence. Electric pet doors are more expensive because of the greater amount of parts. Also, most of them take batteries to operate so you would need to buy batteries when they ran out. If you are more thrifty you might not want to buy an electric pet door.

Having a pet door that opens for itself and lets you just sit there may make some people feel lazy. If you like to keep busy with lots of small tasks then this kind of door might not be right for you.

Some people feel wanted when they have a part in every little bit of their pet's lives. In that case even a manual pet would get in the way of your goal. If that's you then maybe you shouldn't get a pet door at all.

So now it's up to you to decide which door is best for you, if any. If you want convenience and cleanliness then choose the electric pet door. If you are thrifty, active and want to feel close to your pet then choose the manual door or none at all.
