As one who has pets that have been heavily impacted by the poison food manufactured by Menu Foods, I must say how profound this tragedy is. We have two cats and a dog and they all were being fed some of the affected brands. The dog (a puppy) seems to be okay, while the the cats (one just over a year and the other a kitten of about 6 months) are definitely damaged goods! We have spent well over $3,000 on vet bills in the past few weeks. We are devastated. This is bad.
Menu Foods manufactures about 80% of all dog and cat food brands in North America! The magnitude of this disaster, I really don't think has been realized. Newspapers keep mentioning deaths in the range of 20 or so. This is nonsense! The death toll and number of injured animals could easily already be in the thousands! I don't think anything like this has ever happened before.
So what can pet owners do? Well, we have decided not to feed our puppy ANY wet food from ANY source (especially anything made by Menu Foods)! Kibble is apparently for the most part not affected by the poisoned ingredients. We now make out own wet puppy food using ingredients sold for human consumption.
Our cats are on veterinarian supplied food (at about $2.00 a little can). We also hope to acquire veterinarian supplied kibble for the cats. So the fact that both animals have been hit hard by ingesting this poison removes the need for us to make this decision for their food.
But, if they were both healthy pets, not affected by the poisoned Menu Foods products, I would feed them Katz-n-Flocken kibble (a high-end product) for cats, or Purina brands for both wet and dry foods. It is tricky to find a food brand NOT affected by this tragedy.
I sure would not rule out the possibility of terrorists having something to do with the Menu Foods poison product issue! You know the type - the ones that hack of people's heads with pocket knives. How better to strike at our heartland than to swing the guns on our cherished and defenseless pets!
Menu Foods says it will reimburse pet owners who have incurred veterinary bills as a result of their pets being injured by their products. We really hope they are sincere in this. We have been in tough with the Menu Foods call center, but we are still waiting for them to get back to us. I'm not sure they will have enough money to reimburse the potential number of all people who have incurred high vet bills trying to keep the cherished pets alive and well.
