Retractable LeashProducts Relating to 'Retractable Leash'

Retractable leashes for dogs have their pros and cons. As opposed to traditional leashes that snap onto a dog's collar and have fixed length, retractable leashes allow the owner to extend the length of the leash allowing the dog a wider radius of movement.

Retractable leashes are ideal for dog owners who may have large properties or access to parks, who would like their dog to feel the freedom of not being leashed, while maintaining an element of security at the same time. The only time the dog realizes he is still attached to the leash is when he reaches the end of the line. The line can be stopped being pulled out by a small "brake" on the handle, which can be locked in position to stop any further line from being let out.

Dogs love being on retractable leashes, because they experience a sense of freedom only matched by actually being off a leash completely. However, dogs don't always know what is good for them, and retractable leashes are no exception.

If you have a well trained dog that is not dog aggressive and responds well to commands, a retractable leash may be ideal for you. But many owners do not use these leashes correctly, and they may pose a hazard if you are not careful. The ability of a retractable leash to allow the dog to be many feet, sometimes 20-30, away from you, puts you at a disadvantage if you need to control the dog at a moment's notice. The only way to bring the dog back to you is to release the brake and "reel" the dog back in by causing slack on the line and pulling it back into the handle of the retractable leash. So while they call the leash "retractable", your dog isn't necessarily so. If you are taking your dog on a routine walk around the neighborhood, and the dog is too far away from you on the leash, traffic becomes a hazard, and you may not have the time you need in a dangerous situation involving a vehicle.

Also, your dog may be the sweetest thing on four legs, but on a retractable leash, you are not close enough to defend your dog against other possible aggressive dogs that may attack it.

So if you are considering a retractable leash for your dog, be sure to understand the benefits and downsides, and your individual situation. You only want the best for your dog, so make sure your make the best decision with him in mind.
