Pro's and Con's of Using A Shock Collar
Pro's
Most dogs respond very quickly to this type of training. A sudden shock is enough for any dog to realize he shouldn't do whatever he just did. The faster you can train your dog the better. You can save a lot of time and money by using a shock collar. Quicker training means less messes to clean, less furnature to repair, and less unnecessary barking to endure. Most people will choose a shock collar for this reason alone.
A great deal of animal trainers say that you should never hit a dog. This is seen as agressive behavior to the dog and the dog will fear you or lash out at you instead of loving and trusting you. Wih a shock collar you never lay a hand on the dog. This training method is preferable for this reason.
This is one training tool for all training. There is no buying spray bottles and other learning tools. If the dog misbehaves only the shock collar is needed to bring him back in line. It could save money by being a panecia for training tools.
Con's
Some people would argue that shock collars are cruel to use on dogs. The dog will certainly be startled by a shock but is he in pain to the point where it would be considered cruel? The best way to test whether you think it is or not would be to try it yourself first.
A shock collar can be expensive. This is often a deterant to some pet owners. You must decide whether you think it's worth it or not. Should you buy one expensive collar or a few inexpensive training tools? Your budget and willingness to spend a bit more for just one collar will be the deciding factors.
Electronic concerns are things like changing the battery, setting the shock intensity, and learning to use it. If the shock collar you buy uses a lot of power then the battery will need to be changed often to ensure that you and your pet are getting the full benefit of the device. That adds a little cost onto the initial price. You must also concern yourself with setting the shock intensity. If it is too strong you may hurt your dog. If it is too weak your dog won't learn as quickly. Lastly, if you don't have the propensity to using electroning devises then perhaps the shock collar is not for you. Remember that traditional methods of training are not worse, they're just a little slower.
